Teachers Strike Hurts Kids  (Gary Bauer)

The teachers' strike in Chicago is a perfect example of everything that is wrong with teachers' unions. Trust me -- as a former Under Secretary of Education, I know! Once again, the union heads are putting their own interests ahead of the children they claim to care so much about.

What is the issue here? It's not salary. According to various reports, Chicago teachers are the highest paid in the country, earning on average $76,000 a year, not including benefits.
Washington Post columnist Charles Lane reports that approximately 85% of Chicago public school students live at or near poverty level, roughly $27,000 for a family of three. Unbelievably, the union rejected a 16% pay raise.

The real issue is the union's opposition to teacher evaluations and pay raises based on performance rather than tenure. Don't the taxpayers have a right to know what they are getting for their money?

The sad reality is that nearly 40% of Chicago public high school students drop out. Terry Jeffrey at
CNSNEWS.com reports that in 2011, "79 percent of 8th graders in the Chicago Public Schools were not grade-level proficient in reading and 80 percent were not grade level proficient in math."

If anyone should be in the streets making demands it ought to be the parents and taxpayers of Chicago!

When you look at Chicago, you see the fulfillment of the modern liberal agenda. Too many children raised in broken homes without fathers. Rampant crime. Overpaid, incompetent bureaucrats who can't be fired. Why would the citizens of Chicago find any of this appealing? But they keep electing the same left-wing politicians over and over again, and the results speak for themselves.

Speaking of left-wing Chicago politicians, this is all being set up for another Obama rescue. Why do I strongly suspect that in the days ahead we will learn of a midnight call by President Obama to the mayor of Chicago (his former chief of staff) and to union leaders (his biggest political contributors), which resolves the whole thing?

The media will hail the president's intervention as an example of how Obama can get things done. But we already know that he can get things done when he's dealing with a room full of lefties and progressives. That's how we got Obamacare!

Christians Fleeing Syria Because of Islamists

Israel has long faced the scorn of Islamists. Iran's Ahmadinejad has sworn over and again to wipe them off the map, supporter's of Egypt's new president have talked of conquering Israel and making Jerusalem the capital of Egypt, and Palestinians have taken opportunity after opportunity to fire a rocket into the Jewish state and stir things up.

But it looks like Israel is going to have share the Islamist's scorn with Christians, at least for a time. For a group with ties to the United Muslim Nations International has released a 23 page booklet titled, "The Global Islamic Civilization: The Power of a Nation Revived." And in it, they put forth plans to "wipe Christianity from the face of the earth."
Sheik Farook al-Mohammedi, the leader of the group, has made his intentions clear: "Christianity should be destroyed and wiped from the face of the earth [because] it is an evil, demonic and Anti-Christ system" He added: "The Revived Global Caliphate has set eyes on the West to once and for all rid the world of Christianity and there is nothing you can do about it."
Oh, really?

Alone you stood before God when God called you. Alone you had to obey God&#';s voice. Alone you had to take up your cross, struggle, and pray and alone you will die and give an account to God. You cannot avoid yourself, for it is precisely God who has singled you out. If you do not want to be alone, you are rejecting Christ&#';s call to you, and you can have no part in the community of those who are called&#...; But the reverse is also true.Whoever cannot stand being in community should beware of being alone. You are called into the community of faith; the call was not meant for you alone. You carry your cross, you struggle, and you pray in the community of faith, the community of those who are called. You are not alone even when you die, and on the day of judgment you will be only one member of the great community of faith of Jesus Christ&#...; Whoever cannot be alone should beware of community. Whoever cannot stand being in community should beware of being alone. Biblical Wisdom For as in one body we have many members, and not all the members have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of another. http://click.lists.biblegateway.com/?qs=d9d9f97760d44de5b116a9d32fd8f655001b6f8e8acebe7061d71b45e076f056 Romans 12:4-5 Questions to Ponder - Why do so many people in our society seem to fear being alone? - Why do so many churches seem to be mere aggregates of individuals rather than truecommunities of faith? - In what ways can a disciple establish a healthy balance between aloneness and community?Psalm Fragment Praise theLord! How did it make you feel? What did you do? Did your aloneness have any impact on how you felt when you were with others again? - Write about your experience in community. Do you feel an integral part of your community? Do you feel like you have a good balance between time in community and time alone?Intercessions If you know anyone who seems lonely, pray that they might discover true community. If you know anyone who seems afraid to be alone with themselves, pray that they might discover the joy of solitude, of being alone with God. Prayer for Today O Lord, when I am too much alone, help me seek community. German Press Reacts to G-20 Summit - SPIEGEL ONLINE

German Press Reacts to G-20 Summit - SPIEGEL ONLINE

I Found this Devotional of Dietrich Bonhoeffer (I Bow To Genius)

Those who follow Jesus' commandment entirely, who let Jesus' yoke rest on them without resistance, will find the burden they must bear to be light. In the gentle pressure of this yoke they will receive the strength to walk the right path without becoming weary.…Where will the call to discipleship lead those who follow it? What decisions and painful separations will it entail? We must take this question to him who alone knows the answer. Only Jesus Christ, who bids us follow him, knows where the path will lead. But we know that it will be a path full of mercy beyond measure. Discipleship is joy.

Biblical Wisdom

Come to me, all who are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble of heart, and you will find rest for your soul. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. Matthew 11:28–30

Questions to Ponder

  • What is Jesus' "commandment" that we are to follow? (See John 15:12)
  • If this commandment is Jesus' "yoke," how might we be changed if we bear it without resistance?
  • Why might following Jesus' commandment lead to tough "decisions and painful separations"?

Psalm Fragment

Make me to know your ways, O Lord;
   teach me your paths.
Lead me in your truth, and teach me,
   for you are the God of my salvation;
for you I wait all day long. Psalm 25:4–5

Journal Reflections

  • To be a disciple is not just to believe in Jesus, it is to follow Jesus. In your journal, reflect on the ways in which you are presently following Jesus.
  • Do you experience your discipleship as "joy"? Is the "burden" of your discipleship "light"?
  • Do you sense there are places Jesus might want to lead you where you would rather not go? If so, where are they and what is holding you back?

Intercessions

Pray specifically for family, friends, and colleagues that they might clearly hear the call to discipleship (which is the call to love and justice), and that they might experience following Jesus' commandment as joy in the concrete realities of their lives.

Prayer for Today

Lord Jesus, only you know where my path will lead, but I trust that, even if I do not know either the way or the destination, you are with me and before me, and I follow you with joy.

Obama Keeps Going Over the Edge

The Culture War

On June 1st, President Obama issued a proclamation declaring June "Gay Pride Month." Various federal departments will host events throughout the month recognizing their homosexual employees. For the first time ever the Pentagon will host its own "Gay Pride" events this month, "just as it has marked other celebrations honoring racial or ethnic groups."
